PIDs for Academic Librarians (Jun 2024)
The LIR mission is to keep librarians, academic librarians in particular, informed about technologies that affect their practice.
PIDs, or Persistent Identifiers, are long-lasting, globally unique identifiers for people (researchers), places (research organisations), and things (research outputs and grants).
PIDs for Academic Libraries is a collaboration between the NORF National PID Strategy Working Group and the LIR Group. With the launch of the National PID Roadmap, this session aims to further contextualise PIDs for academic librarians. Broad themes will include:
- An introduction to the National PID Roadmap
- PIDs in the context of the National Open Access Monitor Project
- PIDs in the context of the OSTrails Project

Getting started with Oral Histories (May 2022)
The LIR mission is to keep librarians, academic librarians in particular, informed about technologies that affect their practice.
We believe that the transcription and coding of oral material is going to become more popular and so we have designed this plenary session to equip academic librarians, and a broader audience of digital archivists, data stewards, researchers, and historians, with the knowledge and information necessary to at least begin to plan an oral history project.
The Plenary will cover the following key areas:
- Policy and consent forms
- Research methods, interview technique, and planning for digital preservation
- The use of innovative open source software to digitally index recorded interviews and synchronise text with audio and video

Why Web Security is Relevant to Librarians (June 2017)
Why Web Security is Relevant to Librarians
Venue: Computer Lab – LC1-016, Languages Centre, Millstream Building, University of Limerick.
Time and date: 11am -2pm, Wednesday June 28th
We are delighted to announce that Brian Hickey (Dublin Business School), who gave an elucidating and provocative talk on cloud based web security at the LIR Annual Seminar 2016, will host a half-day workshop on this topic. Comprehending the reliability of web security is something all libraries need to prioritise. In this session, Brian will outline practical techniques to ensure cloud based systems are secure.
The session will be pitched at a general library audience looking to garner a deeper understanding of their role in security process and how people / users tend to be the weakest link in the process.
Web-site troubleshooting with web-browsers (June 2016)
Web-site troubleshooting with web-browsers
Dublin City University Library (training room 1),
Tuesday 7th of June 2016, 10am – 12:30pm.
Facilitator: Glenn Wearen, HEAnet.
This workshop was for library staff involved in the delivery of electronic content to end-users, including staff in systems and e-resources roles.
Modern web-browsers have made it easier to troubleshoot web-site issues than ever before. Library e-resources supplied and hosted by publishers should render content correctly, whether delivered by the library proxy or direct. This workshop equipped library staff with the skills to diagnose web site issues which can then be reported to suppliers or resolved on-campus.
The workshop contains the following components:
- HTTP Overview (HTTP Response codes/Header & Body content)
- Cookie handling
- Page elements (CSS/JS/IMG/
- Proxied content.
- JavaScript (client rendering and server requests)
- Emulating mobile devices and off-campus users.

At a seminar in November, we had seen that librarians were really animated about mobile technologies and we were keen to continue that conversation. With over two hundred tweets on the night, we weren’t disappointed – not bad for what turned out to be a gorgeous Summers evening!
