Put AI into Action & Get Hands On With Watson – Hosted by Ronan Dalton of IBM Ireland
What is Watson?
Last year, at the LIR Seminar in Cork, Adrian Vaughan & Michael Costello delivered a presentation entitled: Deployment of an AI-powered Virtual Librarian in CIT Library. Their virtual librarian, which they call Berkeley, is based on IBM’s Watson. Watson is an AI product that that lets you train and deploy conversational interactions into any application, device, or channel”. What you may not know is that Watson is actually a suite of services that can be used for various things beyond chatbots including:
- AI-powered document search,
- Intelligent, automated image classification,
- text analytics with natural language understanding/processing.

What You Will Learn
In this session IBM’s Ronan Dalton (@daltonology) take attendees through the steps involved in building a virtual assistant (aka chatbot!) with Watson. We’ll get hands-on using Watson Assistant to build a bot on IBM Cloud (register beforehand with the cloud for this) and explore options to host the bot online using Watson’s web chat integration.
After a short break, well explore options to extend our virtual assistant with capabilities to search a document repository using Watson Discovery. To wrap up, we’ll look at some additional AI use cases such as image classification with Watson Visual Recognition and advanced text analytics with Watson Natural Language Understanding.
