For anyone who might be considering a return to academia to obtain a PhD:

The School of Information & Communication Studies, UCD is currently offering PhD Scholarships. The total value of the scholarship will be equivalent to the EU fee rate and an annual stipend of €10,000 for a period of up to three years. Non-EU students may be offered the scholarship at EU rate and apply the stipend to make of the difference between the EU and the Non-EU tuition rate. Student levy is not included. [...]

The LIR Committee would like to invite applications for a bursary valued at €500, to be offset against attendance at a national or international conference which considers emerging technologies in libraries.

The bursary will be awarded to a maximum of €500 and can be used to defray costs such as conference registration, travel and accommodation. [...]

UCD's Open Access Publishing Surveys

Dear Colleagues,

The UCD Library Research Services Unit, in conjunction with UCD’s
University Research Managers and Administrators Network (URMAN) Open Access
Group, has distributed two Open Access Publishing Surveys to UCD’s
researchers and research managers/administrators.

Open Access publications (and increasingly data) are of growing importance
as the vast majority of funders (and particularly the EC) introduce and
strengthen their requirements in this area, regardless of discipline.
Moreover, there is clear evidence that release of published research papers
and data through Open Access mechanisms broadens dissemination of research
findings and enhances impact. [...]

Very interesting, I checked for sci-hub accesses on HEAnet's network
today and 134 unique on-campus IP addresses have accessed sci-hub
content since 8am.

Sci-hub are using Amazon's Cloudfront service (and probably the Amazon
geographic cache service too), a publisher can report copyright abuse
on Amazon's services and
action will be taken as it's against Amazons terms of service to host
copyrighted content. [...]
